A traditional Kerala Style Kootu Curry made with chana dal, yam, raw nendran banana, and a flavorful tempering with coconut oil, mustard seeds, shallots, and red chili powder, perfect for the Onam Sadhya.

What you need

cup water

bunch curry leaves

tsp turmeric powder

cup yam

tbsp coconut oil

tbsp shallot

tsp mustard seed
cup shredded coconut
tsp red chili powder

Instructions
1: Wash the chana dal and soak for 1 hour. 2: Pressure cook the soaked chana dal with ½ tsp of salt, ¼ tsp of turmeric and 1 cup of water, for 1 whistle. 3: Cook the yam in 1 cup of water, with ¼ tsp of turmeric powder and ½ tsp of salt for 4 minutes, until it is half done. Add the raw banana and cook for a further 3 minutes, until both vegetables are cooked. 4: Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and when they splutter, add shallots and curry leaves. Saute until the shallots begin to brown. Add the red chilli powder and saute. Add the grated coconut and saute for 1 minute on medium heat. 5: Add the cooked chana dal without the excess water. Add the cooked yam and raw banana. Mix well and cook for 1 more minute.View original recipe
